When I was a kid a fairytale for me was the story of “Thumbalina” or, “Snow White and Dwarfs”. Times have changed. For my nephew, who is 6 years old, a fairytale is the story of Jamal Malik – The Slumdog Millionaire. Yes, indeed times have changed.

Rahman at Oscars

After all the Oscars and the Bafta awards, I have still not come to terms with what has been happening. Till about 4-5 months back, “The Slumdog Millionaire” was just another movie. All of a sudden in such short time, it has become one of the most talked about movie. With 8 Oscars in the kitty, it is indeed worth being the talk of the town. But what made the movie an Oscar winner is still a question mark at least for a common man like me.

You read the Slumdog Millionaire reviews and you feel as if it is an amazing piece of craftsmanship. But would it have been the same had the movie not been nominated for these prestigious awards? Worth wondering.

Danny Boyle

So what made it an Oscar award winning movie. It was excellent story telling by Danny Boyle and soul-rendering music by A.R.Rahman that did the trick. But that should not take away the credit from the actors or, the author of the book. They did their part well but there had to be something additional, which was the only thing that could win accolades.

A.R. Rahman is a genius. As an Indian, I am proud to be a part of a country where he hails from. An Oscar was something that Rahman deserved. His fingers weave magic. His music is so enthralling that you go into a different world of yours if you are at a concert of this maestro.

Slumdog Millionaire

All-in-all the movie was a masterpiece and deserves what it got.

And there is one thing that I got to learn from it. You don’t create an artwork with an award in mind. Instead if it is worthy of being called an artwork it will get an award.
